Chhaava is a 2025 Hindi-language epic historical action film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. The film is an adaptation of the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant.
The movie depicts Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's attempts to expand his empire, challenged by Sambhaji Maharaj after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's death. It covers Sambhaji's nine-year rule defending against Mughal forces and dealing with internal conflicts, his capture and torture by Aurangzeb, and Maratha resistance led by his wife, Yesubai.
The film was directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films. It was released in theaters on February 14, 2025 and on Netflix on April 11, 2025, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2025. Extensive research was done for historical accuracy.
The cast includes Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Akshaye Khanna as Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Divya Dutta as Soyrabai, Ashutosh Rana as Hambirrao Mohite, and Vineet Kumar Singh as Kavi Kalash. Ajay Devgn provided voiceover narration.
Following its release, the film faced criticism regarding historical accuracy and concerns about religious tensions. Filmmakers responded by making changes, such as removing scenes and adding disclaimers.
