he Conjuring 3, officially titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is a 2021 supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves. It is the seventh film in The Conjuring Universe and the third and final installment in the main trilogy, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The film shifts from the "haunted house" formula to explore a real-life murder case in which demonic possession was used as a legal defense.
Plot summary
The film is based on the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, also known as "The Devil Made Me Do It" case.
- The movie opens with the Warrens performing an exorcism on 11-year-old David Glatzel. During the ritual, Arne Johnson, the boyfriend of David's sister, encourages the demon to take him instead.
- Arne later murders his landlord while seemingly in a trance-like state and claims to have been possessed by a demon. The Warrens investigate the case to prove Arne's claim and uncover a satanic curse cast by an occultist.
- As the Warrens delve deeper, Lorraine uses her clairvoyant abilities to connect a series of similar deaths and uncover the occultist's identity. She discovers that the occultist is Isla, the estranged daughter of a former priest named Kastner.
- In the climax, Ed and Lorraine find Isla's altar in the tunnels beneath Kastner's house. Ed, who is also cursed, is temporarily possessed and tries to kill Lorraine, but she reminds him of their love, allowing him to break free. He destroys the altar, which in turn causes the demon to kill Isla.
- Arne is ultimately convicted of manslaughter, but he serves only five years of his sentence. The film concludes with the Warrens adding a final, cursed artifact to their collection.
Fact vs. fiction
The movie takes significant creative liberties with the real case.
- The Possession Defense: In reality, the judge did not allow the "demonic possession" defense, and the jury was not presented with the Warrens' supernatural evidence.
- The Occultist Plot: The storyline involving a human occultist, Isla, and the cursed totems was entirely fabricated for the film.
- Arne's Conviction: Arne Johnson was indeed convicted of manslaughter and served five years, but it was not because the Warrens' evidence was accepted in court.
- The Glatzel Family Lawsuit: In 2007, David Glatzel and his brother sued Lorraine Warren and the author of a book about the case, claiming they had fabricated the demonic possession story for financial gain. Arne and his wife, Debbie, maintained that the events were real.
