Plot summary
The fall of Shiganshina: The story begins in the year 845, when Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert live peacefully within the outermost wall, Wall Maria. Their sense of security is shattered when a 60-meter-tall Colossal Titan breaches the wall, allowing smaller Titans to flood the city. Eren watches in horror as a Titan devours his mother, an event that fuels his intense hatred of the Titans and his vow to exterminate them.
Military training: Following the invasion, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin join the 104th Training Corps to become soldiers. They endure rigorous training and learn to use Vertical Maneuvering Equipment to battle the Titans.
The battle for Trost: Five years later, the Colossal Titan reappears and attacks Trost District. In a desperate attempt to save Armin, Eren is seemingly killed. However, he soon reappears in the form of a Titan, a power he was unaware he possessed. The military uses Eren's new ability to seal the breach in the wall and retake the city.
The Survey Corps and the Female Titan: Because of his unique ability, Eren is placed under the supervision of Captain Levi's Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps, a military branch that ventures beyond the walls. During an expedition, the Survey Corps is hunted by an intelligent Female Titan. The season culminates in a desperate battle in Stohess District, where the Female Titan is revealed to be their fellow cadet, Annie Leonhart.
Cliffhanger ending: Annie is eventually defeated and encases herself in a crystal to avoid interrogation, leaving many questions unanswered. The final shot of the season reveals the face of a Titan hidden within Wall Sina, showing that the Titans' mystery is far from over.
