Key plot points

Humanity retreats and the Armored Titan appears: As citizens desperately try to escape Shiganshina through the inner gate, a large, armored Titan appears and smashes through it, allowing more Titans to enter Wall Maria. This compromises the entire area and forces the survivors to retreat even further, into the territory behind Wall Rose.

A new resolve: After being rescued by Hannes and witnessing his mother's death, Eren is overwhelmed with feelings of weakness and rage. He resolves to kill every Titan in existence to avenge his mother.

The food shortage and the reclamation operation: Due to the influx of refugees from Wall Maria, a food shortage plagues the inner districts. The government sends hundreds of thousands of refugees on a "reclamation" mission to retake Wall Maria, but it is a thinly veiled, disastrous suicide mission to reduce the population and ease the strain on resources. Armin's grandfather is killed in this campaign.

Joining the military: Over the next few years, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin train to join the military as part of the 104th Cadet Corps, with Eren determined to join the Scout Regiment. The episode ends with the three of them starting their rigorous military training. 

Thematic significance

The aftermath is more brutal than the attack: The episode emphasizes that the true horror of the attack was not just the initial violence, but the brutal, long-term consequences that follow. The fight for rations and the callous sacrifice of refugees show a breakdown of humanity within the walls.
