Plot summary

The 104th Cadet Corps: The episode jumps forward two years after the fall of Wall Maria. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin have joined the military's boot camp, led by the strict and intimidating instructor Keith Sadies.

New cadets introduced: Several new characters are introduced during the intense training, including Reiner Braun, Bertholdt Hoover, Jean Kirschtein, Connie Springer, Sasha Braus, and others.

Sasha Braus earns her famous nickname, "Potato Girl," after getting caught eating a stolen potato during roll call and is forced to run until she collapses.

The ODM gear struggle: While most cadets, including Mikasa, quickly adapt to the complex ODM gear, Eren struggles just to balance himself. He becomes frustrated and demoralized, feeling he can't live up to his promise to kill all the Titans.

A broken belt: Eren secretly practices with his gear at night, determined not to fail. When he is finally given one last chance in front of the other cadets, he still fails, but only after keeping his balance for a brief moment. Instructor Sadies then orders him to switch gear with another cadet, Thomas Wagner. With the working equipment, Eren immediately masters the exercise, revealing that his gear was defective from the start. His ability to maintain balance even briefly on the broken equipment impresses Sadies and his peers.

Motivation and backstory: Throughout the episode, the characters exchange stories during their breaks. Eren talks about the fall of Shiganshina, and new cadets Reiner and Bertholdt reveal that they are also from the same area. The episode highlights the trauma shared by those who witnessed the Titan invasion and the desperation that led them all to join the military.
