Attack on Titan season 1, episode 5, titled "First Battle: The Struggle for Trost, Part 1," is a pivotal episode that re-introduces the devastating reality of the Titan threat and ends with the shocking apparent death of protagonist Eren Yeager. The episode immediately follows the reappearance of the Colossal Titan, which breached the outer gate of the Trost district. 

Episode plot summary

The Colossal Titan's disappearance: As the episode begins, Eren attempts to attack the Colossal Titan, but it vanishes in a cloud of steam before he can strike.

A chaotic battle: With the Titans pouring through the breach, the newly graduated cadets, including Eren, are deployed to the front lines. Chaos erupts immediately as the unprepared and terrified soldiers face the true horror of combat. Many panic and forget their training.

The Vanguard Squad is decimated: Eren's Vanguard Squad is quickly overwhelmed by the swarm of Titans. One of Eren's squadmates, Thomas Wagner, is snatched and eaten by an Abnormal Titan, right before the horrified eyes of his comrades.

Eren is eaten: Enraged by Thomas' death, Eren rushes forward recklessly to take revenge. In doing so, he is intercepted by another Titan, which bites off his leg, and he falls. As Eren lies helpless, the remaining squad members are picked off. Armin, paralyzed with fear, is grabbed by a Titan. Eren musters his remaining strength and pushes Armin out of the Titan's mouth, but is then swallowed by the Titan himself.

A shocking conclusion: The episode ends with the audience believing Eren to be dead, swallowed by a Titan just like his mother was five years earlier. This leaves the survivors, including Armin, devastated, and Mikasa with a terrible foreboding.
