The episode picks up immediately after the devastating events of episode 5, in which Eren was apparently killed. 

Plot summary

Armin's grief and despair: The episode begins with a traumatized Armin, reeling from the loss of Eren and his squad. Overwhelmed by panic and guilt, he is unable to fight and is instead rescued by Mikasa. The horror of the situation forces Armin to confront the brutal truth that the world is a cruel and unforgiving place.

Mikasa's inner turmoil: The episode focuses on Mikasa, who is in a separate squad during the battle. Her seemingly calm and ruthless demeanor on the battlefield is contrasted with a series of flashbacks to her traumatic past.

The flashback:

As a young girl, Mikasa lived a peaceful life with her parents. Her mother was of the "Oriental" bloodline, a rare and sought-after heritage within the walls.

One day, a group of human traffickers posing as visitors kills her parents and kidnaps her. Young Eren Yeager, whose father was a doctor visiting the Ackerman family, discovers the crime.

Eren, fueled by a desire to protect her, attacks and kills two of the kidnappers. When the third kidnapper attacks Eren, Mikasa has a moment of revelation, realizes the true, cruel nature of the world, and musters the will to fight and kill her attacker.

Eren comforts the traumatized Mikasa, giving her his scarf to wrap around her, which becomes a signature part of her appearance. He welcomes her to live with his family, cementing their bond.

Mikasa's present battle: The flashback concludes, and a determined Mikasa returns to the present, focusing on her mission to clear the Trost district of Titans.

Forcing the evacuation: Mikasa's single-minded intensity is on full display when a wealthy merchant's supply caravan blocks the escape route for the citizens of Trost. Mikasa calmly but terrifyingly threatens to kill the merchant if he does not move his cart. The crowd rallies behind her, and the merchant begrudgingly complies.

A broken promise: The episode ends with Mikasa, fueled by a renewed sense of purpose from her past, refusing to retreat and going after the Titans with a single thought: she will not lose anyone else.
