In Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 11, titled "Bystander," Eren's investigation into his father's past leads him to former Survey Corps commander Keith Shadis. Flashbacks reveal Shadis's decades-long connection to Grisha Jaeger and the events surrounding Grisha's arrival and life within the walls. 

Plot summary

Eren's search for answers

• Recalling a memory: Following the battle against Rod Reiss, Eren is troubled by the memory of his father in the woods on the day Wall Maria fell.
• Identifying Shadis: Remembering a detail about his father's past, Eren realizes that he needs to speak with Keith Shadis, the 104th Cadet Corps' drill instructor and a former Survey Corps commander.
• Meeting Shadis: Eren and the rest of the Levi Squad find Shadis and confront him. Shadis agrees to share what he knows about Grisha Jaeger. 

Keith Shadis's backstory with Grisha Jaeger

• A new arrival: Shadis recounts how he found Grisha Jaeger 20 years ago outside Shiganshina. Grisha had no memories and was carrying a bag of medical supplies. Shadis, then a scout, took the man under his wing.
• A "chosen one": Grisha's knowledge of the outside world, combined with Shadis's failures as commander, led Shadis to see Grisha as the "chosen one" who would save humanity. Grisha later married Carla, a barkeep, and started a new life within the walls.
• Grisha's secret: Shadis confesses that he watched over Grisha's family but realized he wasn't meant to be the one to change history. He watched Grisha steal the Founding Titan and later found a small, confused Eren in the woods, just after Eren had consumed Grisha.
• A "bystander": Shadis admits to being a mere "bystander" in the events that unfolded, never truly making an impact despite his ambition. He also reveals that he was the one who sabotaged Eren's ODM gear during training out of jealousy but was unable to go through with his cruel intentions. 

Preparation for the retaking of Wall Maria

• Progress on Paradis Island: With Historia's coronation, the new government is now in power, and the military is fully backing the Survey Corps. The glowing ore discovered in the cavern is now being used to develop new, more effective anti-Titan weapons.
• The Beast Titan's plan: The episode also briefly checks in on Reiner, Bertolt, and the Beast Titan. The Beast Titan is shown waiting patiently, hinting at their impending return to Shiganshina.
• Final preparations: As Eren and the Scouts process the information from Shadis, they prepare for their final push to reclaim Wall Maria and head to the Jaeger family basement, hoping to finally uncover the full truth about the world.
