Plot summary

The cavern showdown

• Survey Corps' raid: The episode begins with the Survey Corps, led by Levi, raiding the Reiss cavern. They use gunpowder barrels to create a smokescreen, giving them an advantage over Kenny Ackerman's Anti-Personnel Control Squad.
• Levi vs. Kenny: Levi and Kenny face off once again. The Survey Corps, trained to fight Titans, adapt quickly to fighting humans with 3D Maneuver Gear. They force Kenny's squad into a defensive position.
• Hange's sacrifice: During the battle, Hange is severely wounded after being caught by a grappling hook, but the Survey Corps manages to push Kenny's forces back. 

Historia's choice

• Reiss's persuasion: In the center of the cavern, Rod Reiss continues to pressure Historia to inject herself with Titan serum and consume Eren. He argues that only a person of royal blood can fully use the Founding Titan's power to save humanity, and that the Reiss family's sacrifice is a "divine" mission.
• Eren's despair: Overwhelmed by his recovered memories of his father murdering the Reiss family and stealing the Founding Titan, Eren is riddled with guilt. He believes he is a failure and is willing to be eaten by Historia to save humanity.
• Ymir's influence: As Historia holds the serum, she recalls her promise to Ymir to live a life she is proud of, not a life of sacrifice dictated by others. She questions why the Reiss family did nothing to protect humanity for the past century, and when her father provides an unsatisfying answer, her resolve solidifies.
• The refusal: Defiantly, Historia smashes the syringe on the ground. She denounces her father's manipulative and cruel ideology and refuses to become his pawn. She then punches Eren and declares herself an enemy of humanity, choosing her own path. 

A new Titan is born

• Rod's last resort: Desperate, Rod Reiss ignores his own advice against becoming a Titan and licks the spilled serum off the floor.
• Transformation: The ingestion causes a horrific and massive transformation. The resulting Titan is colossal and disfigured, with an immense size that is uncharacteristic of normal Titans.
• The consequences: The transformation begins to destroy the cavern, triggering an earthquake. As rubble collapses around them, the Scouts and Kenny's squad are forced to retreat while Eren and Historia are trapped. The episode ends with the Survey Corps now facing a new, immense threat—the Titan that was once Rod Reiss.
