In Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 6, titled "Sin," Eren uncovers the horrific truth of his past with his father, Grisha, and the Reiss family. This reveals the dark history of the Founding Titan, and the true reason Eren has its power. 

Plot summary

Eren's recovered memories
In the crystalline cavern, Rod Reiss has Historia place her hand on Eren. This triggers a flood of suppressed memories for Eren. 

• Eren relives the night Wall Maria fell, seeing his father, Grisha, transform into the Attack Titan and massacre the entire Reiss family, including Rod's daughter, Frieda, who possessed the Founding Titan's power.
• Eren then remembers being injected with a serum by his father, turning him into a Titan. In that state, Eren consumed Grisha, inheriting both the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan's powers.
• Historia, too, recalls her memories with her kind half-sister, Frieda, who was killed by Grisha. 

The truth of the Founding Titan and the Ackermans

• Rod explains that the royal family has possessed the Founding Titan for generations. The First King used its power to manipulate the memories of humanity within the walls to maintain peace.
• Rod reveals his intent for Historia to consume Eren and reclaim the Founding Titan, as only a royal heir can fully unlock its power.
• Meanwhile, Levi, Hange, and their squad discuss the meaning of the "Ackerman" name. Levi shares that Kenny and Mikasa's families are immune to the Founding Titan's memory-altering abilities and were historically persecuted by the crown.
• Mikasa and Levi also recall a specific moment in their past where they experienced a sudden rush of strength, which Levi explains is a genetic trait of the Ackerman bloodline. 

The approaching battle

• Levi's squad arrives at the Reiss chapel and discovers the entrance to the cavern.
• Kenny's Anti-Personnel Control Squad prepares to defend the chapel, with the government's recent overthrow giving them a sense of desperation.
• Erwin, now free, rallies the rest of the Scout Regiment, preparing for a full assault on the chapel to rescue Eren.
