In Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 9, titled "Ruler of the Walls," the Survey Corps executes a high-stakes plan to stop the massive and grotesque Titan form of Rod Reiss before it reaches Orvud District. The episode culminates in Historia's decisive moment and her public declaration as the rightful queen. 

Plot summary

The Garrison's defense

• The plan: As Rod Reiss's Titan crawls toward Orvud District, Hange explains that evacuating the town would only cause the abnormal Titan to follow the larger crowd into Wall Sina, potentially leading to greater disaster. The only choice is to use the town as bait and lure the Titan into a trap at the Wall.
• Initial attack: The Garrison Regiment attempts to hold back the Titan with cannon fire, but their attacks are ineffective. The Titan's immense size and crawling posture create a scalding-hot body that is difficult to approach.
• Failed attempt: The cannons do little to slow the Titan down. Its face and upper body are already scraped and burned away from dragging across the ground, exposing its organs and making it even more monstrous. 

The Survey Corps' counter-offensive

• Eren's self-doubt: On top of the wall, Eren, consumed by guilt and feeling useless, is comforted by Armin and Mikasa, who remind him of their resolve to fight for humanity's future.
• Erwin's signal: Once the Titan reaches the wall, the Survey Corps takes over. Erwin gives the command, and the Scouts execute Hange's plan, which involves using a new, more powerful form of 3D Maneuver Gear propelled by barrels of gunpowder.
• The explosion: The Scouts blow off Rod Reiss's hands as he tries to climb the wall. His body, propelled by momentum, slumps over the wall with his gaping mouth facing up. Eren, in his Titan form, shoves a sack of gunpowder barrels down its throat. The resulting explosion obliterates the Titan's head from the inside. 

Historia's moment of destiny

• Slicing the nape: As the fragments of Rod Reiss's body rain down, the Scouts work to destroy the remaining chunks. Historia, filled with a newfound purpose, dives toward the Titan's nape.
• New Queen: Historia successfully slices the nape, killing her father and seeing some of his memories. Below, the townspeople watch her descend. As she lands on a cart filled with soft hay, she stands up and proudly declares herself Historia Reiss, the true ruler of the walls. 

Kenny's final moments

• A fatal wound: In a wooded area away from the battle, a mortally wounded Kenny Ackerman, a survivor of the cavern collapse, leans against a tree.
• Levi's visit: Levi finds him and, instead of arresting him, accepts Kenny's unspoken fate. As Kenny dies, he passes Levi a Titan injection syringe he had stolen from Rod. He also confesses his relationship to Levi, revealing that he is Levi's uncle and had once raised him.
