Plot summary

The film revisits Riley's mind as she turns 13 and is preparing for high school. Her established emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—are surprised by the arrival of new, more complex emotions triggered by puberty. 

The new arrivals, led by the neurotic and fast-talking Anxiety, include Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Anxiety and her new crew believe they need to take control to help Riley navigate the challenging social landscape of high school and impress her varsity hockey hero, Val. 

Anxiety banishes the original emotions to the "back of the mind" and reshapes Riley's "Sense of Self"—a core belief system—to align with her new, more cautious personality. This leads Riley to make questionable choices at a hockey camp, including lying to her parents and friends and recklessly playing during a game, causing her to have a panic attack. 

Joy and the original emotions embark on a mission to reclaim Riley's core memories and Sense of Self and return to Headquarters. They eventually find their way back, and Joy convinces Anxiety that Riley doesn't need to change to be a better person. The emotions work together to build a more complex and nuanced Sense of Self that includes both positive and negative memories. The film ends with Riley reconciling with her old friends and embracing all her emotions as she begins her high school journey.
