Plot summary
The story is set in the summer of 1989 in the small town of Derry, Maine. A young boy named Georgie Denbrough is brutally killed by an evil, shape-shifting entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, after his paper boat falls into a storm drain.
Georgie's older brother, Bill, still haunted by his disappearance, forms a group of outcasts known as "The Losers' Club" with his friends. The friends include:
- Richie Tozier: The loud-mouthed jokester.
- Eddie Kaspbrak: A hypochondriac.
- Stanley Uris: A germaphobe who is skeptical of the supernatural.
- Ben Hanscom: An overweight boy who is new to town.
- Beverly Marsh: A girl who is bullied for false rumors about her.
- Mike Hanlon: An orphan who is homeschooled.
As each member of the Losers' Club has their own terrifying encounter with Pennywise, they realize they are all being stalked by the same entity, which exploits their deepest fears. They learn that "It" emerges every 27 years to feed on the town's children.
The children decide to band together to defeat Pennywise, eventually confronting him in his underground lair in the sewers. After a terrifying battle where they face their worst nightmares, they learn that their combined lack of fear weakens the monster. They manage to fight off Pennywise, forcing it into hibernation. The film ends with the friends swearing a blood oath to return to Derry to destroy It if it ever comes back.

Success and sequel
It was a massive commercial and critical success, with many praising the cast performances and the effective horror elements. It became the highest-grossing horror film of all time upon its release, grossing over $704 million worldwide.
The sequel, It Chapter Two, was released in 2019 and picks up 27 years later as the Losers' Club, now adults, must return to Derry to face Pennywise once again.
