In Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 5, titled "Reply," Commander Erwin's political machinations come to a head, leading to a successful coup against the fake king and corrupt nobility. The episode also reveals the true royal family's secret ritual and shows Eren's imprisonment in a crystalline cave. 

Plot summary

Erwin's plea and the military coup 

• The trial: At his trial in the capital, Erwin is sentenced to execution for treason after making an impassioned plea for the Scout Regiment's existence. He argues that humanity needs to fight to reclaim Wall Maria rather than passively waiting for the Titans to attack again.
• The false report: A soldier bursts in with a fabricated report that Wall Rose has been breached. The fake king and his council reveal their corruption by prioritizing their own safety within Wall Sina over the lives of the Wall Rose refugees.
• The trap: Commander Pyxis, who was in on the plan, exposes the report as a ruse. The government officials have been caught red-handed, prioritizing their own power over the well-being of their people, and are subsequently arrested.
• The new regime: Premier Zachary takes power and the military takes temporary control of the government. Erwin, now exonerated, has successfully orchestrated a coup and is recognized as a hero by the public. 

Eren and Historia's capture 

• Exposing the truth: With the Survey Corps now in a position of power, they inform the public about the fake king and Historia's status as the rightful heir to the throne. Flegel Reeves spreads the news to the press, and the truth of the corrupt government is exposed.
• The Reiss family secret: Hange shares information from her investigation, revealing that the Reiss family's chapel was destroyed under mysterious circumstances five years prior, and that the only survivor was Rod Reiss, who immediately sought out Historia.
• The crystal cave: The episode concludes with Eren regaining consciousness, chained in a massive, crystalline cavern underneath the chapel. Historia appears before him, wearing ceremonial robes, and Rod Reiss is also present, preparing for a mysterious ritual. This sets the stage for the Reiss family's dark secret to be revealed.
